Approaching retirement is obviously a very nervous time but I was also aware of just how complicated it was likely to be too!

In fact the very thought of speaking to several pension companies brought me out in a cold sweat and I was seriously contemplating staying on at work just to avoid doing so!

So on our first meeting I feared Robert would just walk out shaking head in disbelief but to his eternal credit he had obviously seen and heard it all before and just took it all in his stride.

Thankfully through his knowledge, wisdom and patience all out little soldiers eventually lined up and we are now able to spend our time safe in the knowledge that someone seems to care about our money as much as we do.

The details of how we got there could possibly bore you to death and if honest I don’t really understand that much of it (I have however, become very adept at nodding my head in all the right places) so I’ll just give one example which is that without question we are almost £100k better off than we would have been on tax relief alone. If that’s not worth having then please tell me what is?

Finally it’s worth knowing that he’s good company on the golf course and absolutely rubbish at drinking. Perhaps not that interesting but having a silent assassin with the putter in your team never goes amiss and who wants a financial planner that can drink you under the table?!

Prior to talking with Robert, I had been disappointed with the performance of my pension fund after making regular contributions to a leading provider for more than 15 years. My retirement goals of having more time to play golf and more holidays abroad seemed a long way off.
